Patient education material evaluations
Health literacy is defined as one's ability to digest medical information act upon it to make informed decisions regarding their care. The connection between higher levels of health literacy and improved patient outcomes has been well established in current literature. One of the major components of health literacy, is the readability of the medical documents to which patients have access. Completing my undergraduate medical education in the Inland Empire, which primarily services patients from a lower socioeconomic status and limited literacy levels, I have experienced first hand that detrimental effects that misconceptions and misinformation from poorly written educational materials can have. This research is dedicated to identifying the state of the most common patient-facing educational materials regarding common orthopaedic conditions in an effort to identify areas of improvement for future work.
